WPPI is short for Whoooopppi!!

Ok, maybe this isn’t the first time WPPI has been referred to as Woopi or Whoopi, or whatever; but man do I love visiting this convention. IMHO, it’s better than the PMA convention for a photographers experience, but I’m sure it’s all about ones point of reference (cause it’s not exactly an apples to apples comparison.)

Anyway, how nice is it to be held in Vegas every year as well. Hopefully for many years to come. Of course, I’m a bit biased, since I live in Las Vegas. It’s a short trip and I get to go home every night after all the fun. One of the coolest things about the WPPI, all of my photography hero’s and notables are there. I have to admit, I’m a little star struck when I see Gary Fong up there talking on stage about whatever new invention he’s on this year. Doug Gordon, Kevin Kubota, Mike Long, Kirk Volcain and Ed Pierce are just the few that I saw, right there! walking the floor, just like me, way cool. Plenty other superstars of the photography world are always at hand as well, but the aforementioned where the few I actually ran into.

Well, I’m not going to go into every cool item, product, person etc. that I found at this years WPPI; however, I thought I’d mention just a few that I thought were interesting beyond the Biggies. These are mentions of things that I thought would interest me and/or would be a good reference in the future of my photography business. So you have a frame of reference, I shoot weddings primarily, however, I also shot or would like to shoot more of- family portraits, seniors, children, boudoir and pinup. So here we go-

  • Absolute Burlesque – is a cool source for boudoir fashion wardrobe and props.
  • The Fairytale Shoppe – has a great source for fairytale costumes for those cute little girls with angels wings.
  • Spider Holster – this is a cool concept for carrying your cameras on the belt with a slot-lock system. I’m seriously thinking about these and can’t wait ’till they ship the double system again soon. I have Rapid Straps that are great, but they kill my shoulders and back after about 4 hours.
  • ProPhotoApps – a cool idea that will set you apart, well, for now anyways. I’m sure this will catch on quickly, but it allows anyone to have their very own iPhone app for their studio with an Image of the day, social networking built in and news that you control. Very Cool!
  • Wild Sorbet Frame Company – Well,,, it’s a frame company, a cool frame company. Very unique ideas with contemporary and county flair, they call it “Shabby Chic”. I call it, “my crafty sister went to the frame store, bought some ordinary frames, then went to the craft store and bought a bunch of other stuff like paint, patterns, extra wood and stuff, then turned it all into this cool looking custom frame thing that I would never be able to do, kinda frame!” But since there’s Wild Sorbet, I don’t have to be jealous of her creativity, I can just order it.

Well, there you go for now. Just thought I’d bring you some tidbits from the trenches. My knees are aching and my dogs are barkin’, but I will always look forward to this show and the friends I run into from time-to-time while walkin’ around, holla Mindy and Lori!
